ECIA Airport

The Essex County Improvement Authority commissioned Comito Associates to vision new offices at an existing assemblage of hangar buildings at the Essex County Airport in Fairfield, New Jersey, which it has owned and operated for many years. Relocating from conventional office space nearby, the concept was to provide the Authority with its staff offices and operations group and an up close and personal experience with the daily flight activity of the airport. The new office design was a substantial retrofit of an older flight training school space, a pilot’s lounge and miscellaneous airport utility spaces that remain connected to an attached hangar building all located immediately adjacent to the principal airport runway. Using taxiing aircraft on the tarmac runway as the visual focal point, the new offices and support spaces become increasingly transparent winding around an interior corridor that opens onto to a glass runway wall beyond. To unify the theme and character, the building entry is identified with similar glass and polished metal finishes used on the interior offices.
